Calculating inflections
Inflection points can be calculated with the Calculate Inflections form (Prepare > Wells). The input is a TVT/TST projection that you created with the Creating TVT/TST projection button on the strip. Once calculated, the inflection points exist as markers in your Marker Table and your Marker Set that can be visualized in the Well View.
With a projection selected, you can provide a distance threshold and select the wells for which you want to calculate the inflection points. Inflection points are then calculated and added to the associated TVT/TST projection. The inflection points are based on the well trajectory in combination with the dip/azimuth of the strata relative to the wellbore. A wellbore does not need to turn to shallower depths to have an inflection point: it can, for example, have an inflection point where it enters younger strata, even though the well trajectory increases in true vertical depth at that point.
Inflection point creation
- Select the TVT/TST projection for which you want to generate the inflection points.
- Select the wells that the inflection points will be calculated for. If your wells are grouped you can specify which group of wells you want to choose from in the drop down box.
- A distance threshold for inflection point generation can also be specified. This threshold dictates which turning points in the wellbore trajectory will be considered inflection points. Only those turning points that exhibit a change in the wellbore trajectory greater than the threshold specified will be considered inflection points.
- Click Apply to generate the inflection points and keep the form open. Click OK to generate the inflection points and close the form. The inflection points are available in the Marker Table, and in the JewelExplorer under the Inflections item in your Marker Set.
